Geology Presentation – Spectroxopy: “Mining” Information using X-rays & Electrons
How do geologists and other scientists investigate unknown materials (usually rocks and minerals) with modern equipment? The principles and operation of a variety of geology instruments will be described and used (one in real time) to analyze mineral and rock “unknowns”. These instruments include a micro-XRF (x-ray fluorescence spectrometer), an x-ray diffractometer, and a scanning electron microscope with an energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometer. Jeff Thole is a Laboratory Supervisor and Instructor of Geology at Macalester College.
